Employee Hiring Tips for Small Business Owners

A small business owner has a lot to worry about other than just running the business. Financials, employee management, inventory, regulations, licences, payroll and much much more. If you are looking for some best ways of payments options for customers click here. While quite a few obstacles for a small business can be overcome, the most dreaded of the troubles is – quick turnover. Young employees want to learn fast and move to the next job fast, by the time you train them and get them equipped with the skills they need to get the job done well, they’re already waving goodbye! That’s a pain and not easy to tackle. But hiring the right people is the most important thing you can do for your business. Here are a few ways you can be better prepared when it comes to hiring new employees:

Clear Job Description

Write a clear job description. To attract the right talent and to save your own time so that you are interviewing the right candidates, make sure that you are clear on the duties and job expectations. Invest some time when advertising for the position or seek help from experts. Advertise on social media if your potential employees  are in the age group which prefers finding jobs through their smartphone and not conventional ways. Explore and ask around from your existing employees or if you attend any meetings or events for small business owners. Recruiting and hiring can be a long and frustrating process if you don’t know the correct avenues for advertising.

Referrals

One of the best paths to finding good candidates is through referrals. If your existing employees know a friend with similar experience or expertise, it might work out well if friends work together. But when going on the referral path do not miss out on the background checks and checking their credentials. Due diligence in hiring goes a long way.

Benefits

It is a no brainer that companies and businesses that offer good benefits tend to retain more employees. Evaluate your benefits and compare them with your competitors. is there something extra you can offer? Explore what your employees would value the most. If you hire mostly millennials or gen Z, then chances are they do not have kids, so benefits related to children might not be appealing to them. However if hiring women with young kids, childcare and flex hours are most requested.

Career Progression

Most people want to move up in their careers, it helps to show a path of career progression. Chart a career path and explain during the final interview process on where will they be after a year or two working in the position that you are currently hiring. You can retain employees longer if they can see themselves earning more and learning more in the next couple of years. ‘Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ seems like a question that would be relevant a decade back. Not now. Things move much faster so move with the times.
